Research Mandate

Advancing human-centered research at the intersection of art, science and technology.

The Crearte Foundation for Art-Science Innovation is committed to advancing open, accessible and interdisciplinary research across the arts, sciences and technology. Guided by principles of open scholarship and equitable knowledge sharing, all research supported by the organization is made freely available to the public, fostering collaboration, transparency and meaningful societal impact.

1. Policy Statement

The Crearte Foundation for Art-Science Innovation (“the Organization”) is committed to the principles of open scholarship, knowledge mobilization and equitable access to research outputs. In alignment with the objectives of the Tri-Agency Open Access Policy on Publications, the organization requires that all research arising from its funded, supported, or affiliated activities be made freely and openly accessible to the public.

This mandate applies across all research domains, including social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, engineering, health-adjacent systems research, and artistic or practice-based inquiry.

2. Definition of Open Access

For the purposes of this mandate, open access refers to the free, immediate and unrestricted online availability of research outputs, allowing any user to read, download, distribute, and build upon the work, subject only to appropriate attribution of authorship.

Open access within this organization extends beyond traditional academic outputs to include interdisciplinary and artistic research outputs, provided they are documented and shared in accessible formats.

3. Scope of Application

This Open Access Mandate applies to:

  • All peer-reviewed publications resulting from organization-supported research
  • Interdisciplinary research outputs across arts, science, technology, and social systems
  • Community-based and participatory research outputs
  • Technical reports, white papers, datasets (where applicable), and knowledge syntheses
  • Artistic and practice-based research outputs when accompanied by scholarly documentation
  • This policy applies to all researchers, fellows, collaborators, students, and affiliated contributors, regardless of geographic location.

4. Open Access Requirements

In accordance with Tri-Agency standards, all peer-reviewed research outputs must be made openly accessible according to one or more of the following routes:

  • Immediate open access publication in a journal or platform that provides free public access
  • Self-archiving (green open access) of the final accepted manuscript in an institutional or disciplinary repository
  • Deposit in an open-access digital repository maintained or approved by the organization
  • All peer-reviewed publications must be openly accessible no later than 12 months after publication, consistent with federal funding agency requirements.

5.Interdisciplinary Open Knowledge

Given the organization’s interdisciplinary mandate, open access is understood as a mechanism for enabling cross-disciplinary knowledge exchange between:
  • Arts-based research and creative practice
  • Social sciences and systems research
  • Natural sciences and engineering innovation
  • Community knowledge systems and applied research contexts

The organization affirms that knowledge is strengthened through integration, accessibility, and reuse across disciplinary boundaries, rather than confinement within single fields.

6. Licensing and Reuse

Where feasible, research outputs should be published under open licenses (e.g., Creative Commons licenses) that permit:
  • Non-commercial redistribution
  • Adaptation and reuse with attribution
  • Educational and research reuse across disciplines and jurisdictions

Licensing choices must respect ethical, cultural, and collaborative agreements, particularly in community-engaged research contexts.

7. Bilingual Access – Canada

In accordance with the organization’s bilingual mandate:

  • All research outputs must include a French-language abstract
  • Full French translation is encouraged where resources allow
  • Knowledge mobilization materials should aim for bilingual accessibility to ensure equitable dissemination across Canada

8. Data and Supporting Materials

Where applicable and ethically appropriate, research data should be preserved and shared in accordance with FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). Sensitive data (including identifiable human participant data) must be anonymized or governed by ethical restrictions prior to sharing. Creative works and artistic research materials should include sufficient documentation to enable scholarly understanding and reuse.

9. Exemptions and Ethical Restrictions

Open access requirements may be modified or restricted in cases involving:

  • Confidentiality agreements or contractual limitations
  • Ethical restrictions related to human participant data
  • Cultural knowledge protection or Indigenous data sovereignty principles
  • Security-sensitive or proprietary technological development

Any exemptions must be documented and approved through the organization’s research governance process.

10. Responsibilities

Researchers and contributors are responsible for:

  • Ensuring compliance with open access requirements
  • Depositing eligible publications in approved repositories
  • Retaining appropriate publication rights where possible
  • Including required French abstracts in all outputs
  • Coordinating with collaborators to ensure dissemination obligations are met

The organization is responsible for providing guidance, infrastructure support where feasible, and oversight of compliance.

11. Compliance and Monitoring

Compliance with this mandate will be monitored through:

  • Research output reporting mechanisms
  • Repository verification
  • Project-based review processes
  • Periodic audits of funded or affiliated research outputs

Non-compliance may affect eligibility for future organizational support or partnership opportunities.

12. Alignment with National Research Frameworks – Canada

This policy will be reviewed on a biennial basis, or earlier if required, to ensure alignment with evolving tri-agency standards, interdisciplinary research practices, and organizational development.
